>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, december 1st. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. yes, a new month. but looks likes the same-old weather. at least for another day or so. here's a look at the clear condition. not much in the way of fog. perhaps some developing in the next few lawyers around the delta and napa and the central coast. otherwise we are looking at a typically cool start. numbers in the upper 30s in our inland valleys. otherwise upper 40s to near 50

around the bay and in the mid-40s coastside. by noontime well into the 60s, low to mid-60s bay and inland. the coast not far behind. today the warm effort day out of the next seven with potentially low 70s around the bay. quick cooling tonight and the potential for a freeze watch as soon as tomorrow. details on that. and the blustery conditions headed our way. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. familily members of a bay area man held captive in north korea are happy to see the 85-year-old korean war vet is in good health. he appears in a videotape released this weekend by north korean state-run news agency. the palo alto man is apologizing for his role in the north korean war. he said he secretly trained anti-communists during the war. lisa has the latest >> laid the munitions for it,

using explosives obtained from attacking the mine. >> reporter: merrill newman read from what the state news agency calls an apology letter. in it he confesses to acts against north korea committed during the war and even during his recent trip. according to "royters" he served in a top secret army unit that trained a south army anti-communist group. >> a senior agent wrote about north korea in his book, america and the rogue states. he's not sure if newman will be released, especially if they consider him a war criminal, but he does think newman is being used. >> there's a real possibility that the confession will be used since this phony confession has been used, to extract something from the united states. >> like in 2009 when kim jong-il demanded a meeting with

president bill clinton before releasing two journalists. but the video has shaken those back home. >> the poor guy. >> feel bad for i am him. >> newman's family would not comment on the videotape, but did say the swedish ambassador told them that, quote, he is being well-treated and that the food is good." in palo alto, abc news. >> the u.s. state department has reviewed the north korean state media report and the video in a -- in a statement they are urging the state department to release mr. newman. "given his advanced age and health condition, we urge the dprk to release mr. newman so he can return home and reunite with his family." the state department is advising u.s. citizens against traveling to north korea. the state department is also

calling for the release of another citizen being held by north korea. kevin bay has been held for over a year. he is a missionary who has been sentenced to 15 years hard labor after being accused of carrying a computer hard disk containing pictures of starving orphans living in north korea. paul walker, best known for his starring role in the "fast & furious" movies is being mourned by family, friends and fans this morning. he died yesterday in a fiery southern california car crash. he was a passenger riding in a friend's porsche that burst into flames after hitting a tree or a post just north of los angeles. the driver was also killed. walker made dozens of films and often performed his own stunts. two of walker's friends heard the crash and rushed to the scene. >> we heard the crash. we heard the explosion. we got up here as quick as we could to find out what it was. >> there was nothing. we tried. we went through five fire extinguishers. >> okay. >> social media is buzzing with tributes this morning.

his "fast & furious" co-star posted a photo with walker on instagram saying, "brother, i will miss you very much, i'm absolutely speechless." and another tweeted your humble spirit was felt from the start. wherever you blessed your presence you also always left a mark. we were like brothers. paul walker was just 40 years old. a two-year-old vallejo boy is in critical condition this morning after falling into the water during a fishing trip with his grandmother. the fire department rescued the boy from the creek that runs along fairgrounds drive near the six flags discovery kingdom. crews pulled him out just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. the grandmother was unable to reach the boy because she could not swim. firefighters quickly located him in a drainage culvert. they say he was under water for about ten minutes. they were able to get a pulse at the scene before he was taken to the hospital.

new this morning, sonoma county supervisors are expected to devote this week on a number of possible actions to memorialize a 13-year-old santa rosa boy who was shot and killed by a sheriffs deputy last month. andy lopez was carrying a rifle -- a city rifle that the sheriffs deputy said he mistook for a real one. the shooting on october 22nd has since generated a wave of anger and protest from the community. the santa rosa press democrat reports one possible healing action supervisors may take on tuesday is to create a park bearing lopez' name in the neighborhood where he grew up and died. teenage burn victim sasha fleischmann is looking forward to return to high school tomorrow after being released from a san francisco hospital on wednesday. he celebrated the holiday at home while recovering from

severe burns suffered in a hate crime. he is identified as neither male nor female. he was riding on a bus when a 16-year-old boy set the teenager's skirt on fire while sasha was sleeping. sasha suffered major burns on the leg. chronicle said the straight-a student is looking forward to getting back to work as editor of the school magazine. the boy who set the fire, 16-year-old richard thomas, has been charged as an adult with two felony hate crimes. in the south bay police say the shooting death of a 92-year-old woman and her 89-year-old husband is a murder-suicide. a relative who went to check on the couple discovered the bodies yesterday afternoon in their apartment on union avenue in campbell. the names of the couple have not been released. it's been a particularly dangerous holiday weekend on bay area roads. four people have died in traffic accidents since thanksgiving.

three of the four were pedestrians hit while walking on freeways. the latest fatality, an accident on the we felt bound lanes of highway 84 on the dumbarton bridge friday night. a man was hit by a car and killed. the chp is reminding drivers to not get out of their cars on busy roadways. >> it's not okay to stop in a lane and start to exchange information with someone. the most important thing is your safety and the safety of your passengers. >> the chp has declared the thanksgiving holiday weekend a maximum enforcement period. police in san francisco has identified a suspect in the killing of two cats last week. security cameras from two hotels near the ferry building captured the man investigators were looking for. he threw a woman's cat carrier into the bay last afternoon, drowning the two animals inside. suspect you see there, described

as a white man about 6 feet tall carrying a skateboard. we are learning a new details about a plan to move residents on treasure island because of toxic chemicals that may have contaminated the ground beneath them. two dozen households on the island have received notice the to vacate their premises. they need to move so the navy can clean up the toxins that seeped into the ground. the area was a solid waste dumping site when the island was a naval base. >> the issues have been known about for some time but it's time for the navy to move forward with their cleanup activities. they need to vacate the buildings in order to facilitate the projects they will be undertaking. >> the treasure island director said they will find other places on the island for the displaced residents to stay. an informational meeting for residents will take place december 11th. starting today a parking lot that frequently floods will be

the people who prepare your feed when you eat out. 50% of americans don't trust them. >> there are places i don't go because i don't trust them or i don't care for the place. >> two-thirds of americans don't trust the people who swipe their credit cards when they go to a restaurant or other business. >> it can go bad, either way. that's why i use cash. >> i would probably be more concerned with a credit card. i know what you are saying, there is probably more to worry about with the food. worse if you send it back, right? >> trust has been slipping like a first-time ice skater. only about a third of americans felt the government can be trusted. 50% and that's down from when the survey was done 30 years ago. >> hardly anyone trusts the politicians in washington. only 20% say the government will do the right things. >> i feel like our leaders aren't able to do what they need to do because we are stuck in congress.

>> this ward in oakland is part of the 2%. >> i believe we choose great representatives to represent us for those who get out and vote. >> kenny, the clown, has his own perspective. >> some politicians i'll say are statesmen, some are, well, clowns. >> if you can believe a clown. >> in san francisco, john alston, abc7 news. >> despite upgrades costing nearly half a billion dollars, oakland international airport continues to see business laying while sfo's passenger growth continues to surge. the san franciscan cal reports the annual passenger down at oakland international has plunged almost 5% since 2007. at the same time sfo's annual passenger count has jumped nearly 9% for the same time period. paper sites two factors. trend by airlines to move passengers through hubs like sfo, and to direct bart service to the san francisco airport.

there's hope the international airport will bring more flyers back to the east bay. an update to a story wave been following. surgery that saved a man hose man's eyesight. it happen. cheryl jennings has this post surgery report. >> i can see everything, i can read everything again. actually it's just like amazing. >> william fleming is still in a bit of shock over the fact he was able to get surgery recently to save his sight, thanks to the power of social media. we wanted to see how this father with five children is doing now that he's back home in san jose. >> it opened up -- makes millions of opportunities. back to driving, back to being with my kids, just to go grocery shopping by myself. >> he went to los angeles for the surgery at the office of doctor brian. he specializes in the treatment of the degenerative eye disease.

>> i haded 3-chocum done. >> there were a procedure procedures, including inserting special lenses under his cornias. it cost $8,000. that's money the family didn't have and insurance doesn't cover it. here's how social media came into the picture. his fiancee learned about the work, the doctor's work, on the internet and started a fundraising campaign but it was slow. so her mother messaged me on conversation. we had several conversations. then i sent out a tweet and asked for help. to our surprise, somebody said they would help. >> an anonymous donor has stepped in and was very moved by hearing about you and they are actually going to take care of the procedure for you. >> the doctor surprised the family with the news by skype and they were overwhelmed. william's life started changing the moment he sat up on the operating table. >> i looked around the room and i looked through the window.

was so vibrant, so bright. >> just the way he was look at me, he was able to see me and smiling and laughing, i knew he could see so much better. on the way home he was reading the signs on the side of the freeway and reading the license plates. i'm like you are a big kid. >> william is an in-home caregiver for nena's brother, bo, who has cerebral palsy. and bo and the family wanted to share a message made by the little ones. it's a beautiful message to the anonymous donor and the doctor. >> thank you for saving our daddy's sight. >> i wish i knew the person and was able to invite them over for thanksgiving. say come sit with us. >> you gave me my gift before christmas, and i thank you. you gave me the gift of sight, which is a beautiful thing. >> cheryl jennings, abc7 news. >> it is, indeed, and he is already filling out applications for new career opportunities. if you would like to find out

be a freeze warning. it lacks likely. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. all is clear. little fog this morning compared to yesterday. from santa rosa, napa and the delta looking at a little bit of a potential ground fog. but from our roof camera you can see how clear it is. san francisco very light winds and the current temperature is if the upper 40s downtown. 44 in oakland. it's 43 in san jose. good morning, half moon bay. clear start for you and 41. about 20, 25 degrees of warming once again today as high pressure is in command. from our sutro camera, the sun not coming up until after 7:00. mid-30s santa rosa and with the little bit of ground fog in napa. 37 novato and 30 degrees concord. getting cool in the east bay values valleys but we will recover nicely. here it is mt. tam this morning. nice and clear. high pressure continues to build in. we are look at a light off more flow, allowing for the warmest

day out of the next seven will be today and then cold and windy by probably mid-afternoon tomorrow. certainly tomorrow night. so we have the winds in advance of a strong area of low pressure headed our way. but for the here and now we are looking at high pressure, fair weather maker with those down-sloping winds. the light offshore flow bringing not only sunny, but mild conditions with temperatures probably in and around the 70-degree mark up in the north day, santa clara valley, getting close to that and out toward livermore. but here is the leading edge of a system that will bring down much cooler air. the energy or the moisture unfortunately is going to be pushing off to the east. what is left will be the cold and windy conditions. so 7:00 monday morning still high pressure is hanging on. but look what happens as we go through the day. here comes the colder air. the rain stays up to the north. but a little bit of it. it will sink south. the pressure gradients tighten

>> welcome back, everyone. we have breaking news. this is a live look in new york. what has happened there is that four or five cars on a seven-car train derailed about 100 yards north of the station. there are said to be multiple injuries from this. a passenger train derailment. the extent of the injuries is not known. this is in the bronx, new york. it was reported about 7:20 east coast time today. the fire department said 130 firefighters are now on the scene. again, four or five cars of this seven-car train derailed just shy of the station. the crash was reported by an engineer. it's not reported how many or if any crewmembers have been injured. but we do know there are said to be multiple injuries of passengers on that train. we will bring you more

>> welcome back, everyone. less start this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. we still have a dry air mass over the bay area. temperatures are cool. in fact cooling to the dewpoint in santa rosa and napa with some fog. also by the water, the delta. but it is 52 in oakland. mild there. a look at visibility. you can see napa, the delta, santa rosa, all at about 4 miles. but novato particularly bad at 8 miles. and a little bit of fog forge along the coast. we are looking at today featuring more sunshine and temperatures even warmer than yesterday.

the warmest day we've seen in quite some time. the green and the yellow indicating a mild air mass. we are the light offshore flow. 60s and 70s. wait null see the forecast and a potential for freeze coming our way in the upcoming work week. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. eight people have died in a helicopter crash in scotland. a police helicopter slammed into a crowded public on friday. the three people on board died, along with five others who were inside the bar. investigators from throughout the united kingdom are sifting through the helicopter wreckage, look for clues into what brought it down. an alaskan woman is being called a hero this morning after she survived a plane crash and walked a mile in frigid weather to find help. the crash killed her 25-month-old son and three others on board. coffee and five others survived but were seriously injured. president obama's self-imposed deadline for getting all the kinks out of the healthcare website passed

yesterday, but it's still not operational this morning. a government progress briefing scheduled for yesterday has been postponed. it will happen today. but how well it's all going depends on who you ask. >> reporter: important parts of the government's health insurance website will be out of operation longer than usual this weekend. healthcare.gov continues to need maintenance and repairs. it's familiar news. >> look, the rollout of the new healthcare marketplace was rough. and by the way, the website is continueally working better, so check it out. >> reporter: there's a long line of promises from the administration. >> by the end of this month we anticipate it will be working the way it is supposed to. >> we will have it fully functioning by the end of november. >> it will take until the end of november for an optimally functioning website. >> reporter: and this expert did find significant improvement. >> i think that they can expect to have a lot less issues and errors with their user experience.

>> reporter: yet the website let's this would-be consumer sign on but not sign up. >> the frustration is very high at a ten. i don't see it as just a website problem. >> reporter: computer experts say don't be surprised at more delays. >> if the demand is way too high, absolutely anything could crash. >> reporter: and the government is damping down expectations. >> to be clear, november 30th does not represent a relaunch of healthcare.gov. it is not a magical date. >> reporter: the white house is nervous about new glitches this weekend, especially if demand hits 200,000 as it did in early october. even if it works perfectly, it -- the website can only handle 50,000 users at a time and 800,000 in a day. in new york. >> there is more ahead on the efforts to fix the problem on healthcare.gov on "this week" at 8:00. the affordable care act also faces some new obstacles with a challenge to the u.s. supreme court over one of the law's

>> break news this morning out of new york. you are looking at live pictures of train derailment there. what has turned into a deadly train derailment the metro north passenger train went off the tracks in the bronx. this was early this morning about 4:30 our time. four people are said to be dead. 40 others injured in this bronx train derailment, according to cnn. the fire department of new york says that about 130 firefighters are now on the scene of this derailment none of the cars entered the hudson or harlem

rivers, though one witness said they were right on the edge there. those rivers are adjacent to the track. the agency says that the crash was reported by an engineer. it's not clear if any crewmembers have been injured. but again, four or five cars of a seven-car train, might even be an eight-car passenger train, some reports are saying. but we do know there are multiple injuries, perhaps as many as 40, as cnn are reporting, four people dead in this train derailment in the bronx. we will continue to bring you more information as it becomes available this morning. after a series of problems, space x will try again tomorrow to launch their falcon 9 rocket into orbit. they tried thanksgiving day twice, but both attempts were aborted with less than a minute remaining because of technical glitches. space xceo said the nine

looks pretty good this morning with not much of anything going on there. just a little bit of traffic. 36 santa rosa. napa and novato the cool spot at 34 and 30. concord and livermore 34 degrees. mt. tam, we are clear. the forecast highlights a little bit of fog. temperatures, the coolest north of the golden gate. warmest date today for everyone with the light offshore flow. temperatures as much as 10 to 15 degrees above average. again, we should sit at about 59, san francisco and oakland. it could be 70 today in many locations. colder and windy as soon as midday tomorrow. in fact, we could have a freeze watch issued by tomorrow night. then some freezing mornings. probably with freeze warnings right on through friday. but not today. a big dome of high pressure continues to nudge into the eastern pacific. it is bathing california not only in sunshine but mild temperatures.

the light offshore flow for one more full day. tomorrow it looks like we will continue with the warm conditions to start. and then things change. so as for today, well into the 60s for sacramento and chico, even monterey on the coast. yesterday of it the low 50s northern sierra with teens. good snow making. look what happens by the afternoon. 58. 62 southern sierra. in the upper 70s in los angeles. so if you were hoping for maybe a little precip with this winter weather maker. here's what we have for you. 7:00 tomorrow morning a little bit of fog. here comes the cold air mass. notice the snow that if we see any at all, the higher elevations here will be lake county, maybe a flurry or two and only about one to three inches in the sierra nevada. not much moisture with this at all. most heads into the rockies. then the cold air mass stays with us and it settles right on in here through much of the upcoming work week. 68 today in palo alto. 70 san jose. more 70s up north of the
